What are church elders? If you grew up going to a church where elders played an important role, then you might have some idea of what it is all about. For many people, this church office in the New Testament is new and confusing.
In this episode, I continue our short series in explaining church elders. We look into the roles and responsibilities of elders, as well as the relationship between the elders and congregation. Check out the show notes below for highlights and resources.
Show Highlights
The roles and responsibilities of elders can be broad. I break them down into 5 primary roles.
Elders are responsible for leading, shepherding, teaching, praying for, and equipping the church.
“The office of elder is an important office because of the role the elders perform. Their primary task is not merely to run the church but to care for the spiritual lives of the congregation. As leaders, shepherds, teachers, and equippers, elders have the immense responsibility and privilege of helping God’s people become more holy and Christlike.” Benjamin Merkle
The congregation and elders share authority in the church.
Mark Dever’s six points on the relationship between the elders and the congregation:
Church members should trust and obey their leaders.
Clear recognition.
Heart-felt trust.
Evident godliness.
Sincere carefulness.
Beneficial results.
